"The Civil War is ending. Mill hands Jen and Hannalee are taken to Indiana and Kentucky and work for three dollars a month. Hannalee runs away to save Jem, who is working disguised as a girl. Hannalee disguises herself as a boy because Yankees will be looking for a boy and a girl, not two boys. They get on trains, walk, and ride a horse all the way back to Nashville, Tennessee, their home. The south loses the Civil war, ending slavery."
