"Will Page is the only person in his family alive. His brother was shot and his parents were killed by Yankees. He is sent to his uncle's house, who refused to fight in the war. Will goes through bullies, even makes friends with them, and then gets beaten up by one of them. He offers to teach his cousin Meg how to read. The bully gets beaten for no reason, so Will offers to be beaten. Hank, the bully, says 'forget it.' They become friends again, but Will had gotten a letter asking if he wanted to go home, but he chooses to stay."
