"This book is about a girl named Birdie. She and her family came from Carolina to Florida to be farmers. They grew strawberries. Their neighbors, the Slaters, aren’t very nice people. But Birdie becomes friends with their son Shoestring, and their little ones Essie and Zephy. The Slaters, all except Shoestring and Sam, become sick and the Boyers take care of them. Sam comes back and tells the Boyers to leave. But then he sees that his wife had been sick and the Boyers were helping. So they all turned out to be friends."
